Unlike other technological innovations, the rapid development of artificial intelligence systems has sparked a debate, which cannot be defined as trivial, on the ethics that should characterize this transformation. Over the past five years, the Holy See has contributed significantly to the birth of “algorethics”, both through various interventions by the Pontiff and thanks to initiatives and documents proposed by some Vatican bodies directly involved in this field. Through a methodology that has privileged the participation of all actors in this process, the question of the ethics of artificial intelligence has been based on a positive, but not naive, assessment of these technologies. The result is an ethical reflection that is not limited to reducing potential risks but rather raises the question of what future for humanity and society we want and can build thanks to the introduction of artificial intelligence systems, and what conditions are necessary for this to happen.
