Abstract

This paper addresses the relationship between science and engineering, at the same time that it analyzes techniques and technologies, which are so closely related to those two topics. The point of view that is argued here is not the conventional one at present; it is somewhat reminiscent of the one adopted a few decades ago, although it is set forth with a perspective that incorporates current elements. In the arguments detailed here, engineering is identified as the higher form of technology, following a proposal by Ortega y Gasset that was widely accepted at the time, but lately seems overlooked. This author stated in his well-known book, Thoughts on Technology, that “technology [is] the reform that man imposes on nature towards the satisfaction of his needs”. This statement could serve as a starting point to this paper.
