"Science, Technology, and Society" in Science Fiction Literature

Science fiction literature was born in the nineteenth century, mainly through the works of three authors: Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H. G. Wells. In their writings, the utopian genre was transformed into a form of popular literature that emphasized the potential of science to lead us to new worlds full of surprises and wonders. However, from its very beginnings as a genre, science fiction has also warned us that this world transformed by technoscience can become strange and, at times, hostile to us. This evaluative ambivalence regarding the impact of technoscience on our lives runs throughout the history of science fiction as a literary genre—an ambivalence that ultimately depends on the very concept of technoscience being applied.
