Abstract

This article explores the debate about ethics in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), with the purpose of contributing to the understanding of socio-technical systems that integrate ethical deliberation and the codification of decision criteria in the development of intelligent systems. It begins with an examination of the issues of ethics and responsibility in the context of intelligent systems and autonomous agents. Next, the interpretative frameworks of public goods (open science) and private goods (commercial science) are considered, addressing the discourses of two multilateral entities and two companies, respectively. This article considers the co-construction of socio-technical systems where the relevance of ethics and responsibility is recognized, computer development is conceived as a social practice and ethical demands are operationally transferred to intelligent systems through value-oriented design methods. Finally, the relationship between ethics and technological development is discussed with respect to the co-creation of socio-technical systems and intelligent systems that meet responsibility criteria.
