Los rankings y sus usos en la gobernanza universitaria

A pesar de las contundentes críticas que académicos y autoridades universitarias de distintos países han realizado a los rankings universitarios -principalmente debido al reduccionismo de la metodología utilizada, centrada en un único modelo de universidad de investigación de élite-, su impacto en la gobernanza de las instituciones de educación superior resulta cada vez más importante. En este artículo analizamos cómo, según la experiencia internacional, los rankings influyen en la gobernanza universitaria, afectando el proceso decisorio de sus agentes internos y externos. Primero, los principales rankings son empleados por los estudiantes internacionales, especialmente por aquellos con mayor capital económico y cultural, como un mecanismo para confirmar la elección realizada al momento de decidir dónde cursar los estudios de posgrado. Segundo, son utilizados por los gobiernos para asignar fondos de becas para estudios en el exterior y en la selección de unas pocas instituciones a fin de consolidarlas como “universidades de clase mundial”. Y finalmente, la estructura de gobernanza interna de las instituciones utiliza los rankings en el diseño de sus planes estratégicos y en su actividad de benchmarking, analizando cómo pueden competir mejor por los estudiantes y el financiamiento en sus propios países y en el plano internacional.Descargas
