Who Can Speak about Artificial Intelligence?

In recent years, media interest in artificial intelligence (AI) has grown exponentially, fueling debates about its applications, benefits, and risks. In this context, expert sources play a key role in shaping the news narrative. This article examines media coverage of AI from a gender perspective, paying particular attention to the sources used. To this end, it analyzes news articles published during the first six months of 2025 in the digital editions of El País and El Mundo that include the terms "Artificial Intelligence" or "AI" in their headlines, identifying a total of 529 personal sources. The results reveal a significant gender imbalance in source selection: women represent, on average, 26.84% of the total. Furthermore, a clear horizontal segregation is observed based on the topic and the assigned role. This underrepresentation of women can influence both how key issues are addressed and the construction of perceptions about which actors have the legitimacy to participate in the public debate. In this sense, the incorporation of diverse voices not only responds to a principle of equity, but is also fundamental to enriching the quality and plurality of the debate surrounding AI.
