This paper aims mainly at conceiving, implementing and evaluating an ongoing training program for teachers of the first cycle of basic education in the area of science education. This training program was proposed to encourage planning, implementation and integrated practice assessment competences in formal and non-formal science education with a STS outlook. Twelve teaching trainees from the Escuela Ciência Viva de Vila Nova da Barquinha, the only first cycle school in Portugal which has in an Integrated Center for Science Education, participated in this study. Data collection techniques used consisted of questionnaires, participant observation and documental compilation. The information was analyzed following a content analysis technique with a mixed category system. Data analysis shows that teachers undergoing training developed different types of learning, including science education orientations, management of science teaching and learning processes, and children’s learning assessment. This paper concludes that the training program boosted the professional development of teacher trainees, especially in terms of an increase and improvement of their integrated practices of formal and non-formal education in science.
