Abstract

This paper offers some reflections on the scope and the consequences of the growing prominence of scientists, scientific institutions, and universities in general in the production of technological goods, the generation of innovation and the participation in the creation of companies and products requested by the private and the state sector. These activities can generate quality job openings, an increase in competitiveness in the economic sector, and in the citizens’ quality of life. Many universities and research institutes have traditionally focused on activities related to the production of knowledge and teaching. However, the current model applied in several countries involves a shift of scientists’ activities towards a scientific- technological profile. This piece presents a look on this process of change.
