Humanist Illiteracy and Disciplinary Disconnection in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

In response to the profound consequences of the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in human life, numerous scholars have turned their expert reflection to what has been called AI ethics. This discipline brings together multiple sectors of knowledge around the common goal of reducing the risks associated with this technology and, ideally, enhancing its positive contributions. However, despite the collectiveness of the effort, a sort of dissociation between technical experts and humanists remains. This article evaluates the social role of humanist academia and the phenomenon of peripheral practical reasoning (PPR), proposing in turn the biconditional reciprocal literacy (BRL) regarding the techniques and challenges of AI. Lastly, a proposal with the minimum contents required for promoting AI literacy within humanist scholars, to enable a truly ethical practice regarding AI, is presented.
