Abstract

There are innovations that, due to their disruptive nature, have the potential to challenge the immobility of positions acquired in the existing economic structure of a particular industry. These are called the fundamental innovations. The enormous productive potential that was opened up by the irruption and spreading of gene-editing techniques, in addition to certain signs of exhaustion in the path associated with plant transgenesis, allow us to consider the existence of an impasse in the structure of the global agrobiotechnology industry. Within this framework, we take into account the implications that these changes may bring to the countries of Latin America, which until now have taken a position of adopters of fundamental innovations within this industry.
