In this paper, the Pasteur-Liebig controversy about fermentation is presented as an interesting story of the history of science (HOS) to address some nature of science (NOS) issues in science education. The didactic proposal is founded on the current positions about how to teach NOS, and especially in the context of HOS. The proposal promotes understanding of the NOS aspects from an explicit and reflective approach, and it is focused on the prospective secondary education science teachers’ training. Attention is given to both epistemic and non-epistemic aspects in the text of the controversy and the NOS questions asked. Also, some methodological recommendations for implementing and assessing the didactic proposal in science classroom are offered.
