Lessons and Capabilities Developed by Parent Organizations from the Creation of Spin-Offs
Evidence from the Argentine Case

This article investigates the learning process related to R&D capabilities that a parent organization can develop from the creation of a spin-off. Based on the characteristics assumed by the relationship between both parties, the different types of learning and the conditions that favor them are analyzed. To this end, a case study of the relationship between nine knowledge-intensive spin-offs - belonging to the agricultural-livestock and food sector of Argentina - and their parent organizations is carried out. Among the main findings, the identification of a series of learnings that respond to different aspects of the relationship in the binomial stands out; verification that these learnings are also verified if the spin-off is recently created; and the identification of the conditions that allow learning, such as the existence of hybrid spaces, the R&D capabilities of the spin-off, the existence of joint projects and the dual affiliation of the founder.
